Meet Green Tentacle. A good-natured genetically engineered freak of nature living with the Edisons. Now meet Purple Tentacle. Green's evil brother. Now normally, Purple poses no threat to anyone of the human race due to his limited IQ and non-existance thumbs. Until today. Through the miracle of science (and a disgusting by-product called sludge), Purple has been transformed into a raving lunatic genius, bent on world domination!

Shortly after Purple's transformation and a quick attempt to seize the world, the resident scientist, Dr. Fred Edison, took him and his brother Green into captivity scheduled to be terminated to protect the world. Green Tentacle cannot prove himself innocent and must resort to one last hope.

Meanwhile, at an off-campus dorm, the local college geek, Bernard Bernoulli receives a distress letter from a caffeine-hyped hamster. No sooner does Bernard discover his friend is in danger does he set out into action return to the mansion and prevent this catastrophe!

Teaming up with with two friends, Hoagie, the overweight heavy metal roadie with an IQ equal (or less) to a groundhog, and Laverne, the psychopathically crazed med student, Bernard gets into his pick-up truck and races off in a suicide rescue mission! Little does Bernard know that this is only the beginning, and that the following events will soon decide the fate of the past, present, and future. Will it be the Day of Victory, or will it be the

I feel like I can...TAKE ON THE WORLD!
Walkthrough written by Chris Ushko

After a quick ride through town, Bernard and his friends arrive at the infamous Maniac Mansion to find it transformed into a third-rate motel. Arranging commando plans, Bernard sends out Hoagie and Laverne to search the mansion for Dr. Fred's lab and rescue Green Tentacle, leaving Bernard to search the lobby and office.

Where is Dr. Fred's Secret Lab?
Search the area thoroughly.
Inspect everything you see. Thing's aren't as they seem...
Try looking at the Grandfather Clock. Bernard points out there is something funny about it...
Open the Clock! You've found the secret passage to the lab!

Meanwhile we rejoin Hoagie as he's just run into Laverne upstairs (who is supposed to be downstairs). No sooner do these two minds meet than Dr. Fred wanders into the conversation and explains that it's imperative Purple Tentacle stays captive. Laverne and Hoagie catch on quickly, but Bernard on the other hand.

Down in the basement, we find Bernard as he's untying the Tentacles and setting them free. Unfortunately, Purple runs off to continue taking over the world and Green goes chasing after him just as Dr. Fred comes in to give Bernard a lecture about his actions. It is then decided the only way to stop Purple is prevent him from ever consuming the toxic sludge in the first place. To the Time Machine!

Bernard, Hoagie, and Laverne are soon crammed into hi-tech port-a-potties (Chron-O-Johns) and launched off through time to change the history of the world. Of course, things go wrong the second the machine malfuntions ("And they said imitation diamond wasn't good enough...uh-oh.") The malfunction causes the trio to go sliding into different time periods! Hoagie goes crashing down 200 years in the past, needing to build a super-battery to repower his machine. Laverne crash lands 200 years in the future, and ends up getting stranded in a tree. As for Bernard, his Chron-O-John goes slamming back down into the present, forcing him to find a real diamond to fix the time machine.

As Bernard, where do I find the plans for the Super-Battery?
Dr. Fred wouldn't leave that lying around publicly.
It would have to be either in his office or lab.
Considering Dr. Fred is covering the upstairs, the lab is the best place to search.
The plans are found on the TO DO board on the east side of the lab.

Remember that you may give an inventory item to any of your friends by merely flushing them through the Chron-O-John. And you don't need to walk back there all the time. Just click the item on their face.

History starts with Hoagie

Where do I find Red Edison?
He sounds eccentric. Probably likes to hole himself up.
If he's anything like his descendant, there's probably a common place to hide.
This is exactly like the first puzzle.
Go into the mansion lobby and open the Grandfather Clock to locate his lab. He's right in there.

Why doesn't he build the Super-Battery? Is he missing anything? Is he stubborn?
He's stubborn, yes, but that's not the problem.
He requires three missing components for the construction.
Oil, Vinegar, and Gold.
Find the three missing ingredients for the formula.

Where do I find Oil?
Talk to the Mummy out in the lobby.
Hoagie clears his thoughts when they talk.
Any type of oil will do, including cooking oil.
Go into the kitchen and take the cooking oil from the cupboard.

Where do I find Gold?
Go west, young man!
Or stay here in the east. THere may be gold lying around.
It may be manufactured.
There's a Gold Quill Pen in the main hall.

Thomas Jefferson is guarding the Gold Quill Pen! How do I get it away from him?
There's no telling how history would change if you beat him up.
You can't make any switches either, he's watching carefully.
You'll have to chase/scare him away.
Set off the fire detector to scare him off.

How do I set off the fire detector?
First you need a fire.
Next you need to get the smoke to flow out of the fireplace.
This will result in setting off the alarm and scaring off the politicians.

How do I start a fire when Thomas "Log Lover" Jefferson won't give out the log to start a fire?
He and John Hancock provide important information here.
I bet that if George "I spent the winter at Valley Forge" Washington was cold, he'd start a fire.
If you make George cold, Thomas will be glad to offer his log for the fire.
Or if you make George APPEAR cold.

George Washington is too proud to be cold! What do I do?
Make him look cold! That should be enough to convince Jefferson!
Think of symptoms cold people have...
Chattering teeth, blue skin, frostbite...chattering teeth might work.
Give the pair of Chattering Teeth to Washington.

Where do I get the Chattering Teeth?
Refer to the Bernard section.

Washington already has a pair of teeth. How do I get around this?
Keep in mind they are only wooden teeth.
You'll notice they are easily removable if you watch him smoke long enough.
It will take a lot of force, and some cunning, to get those out of his mouth.
Offer him the Exploding Cigar and light it. It should blow them out of his mouth.

Where do I get the Exploding Cigar?
Refer to the Bernard Section

Where do I get the Cigar Lighter?
Refer to the Bernard section.

The fire has been started. How do I get the fire detector to go off?
You need to back up the smoke through the fireplace.
Block off the chimney by doing it from the roof.
Use something to cover the chimney.
Use John Hancock's blanket to cover it off and block off the smoke.

Where do I get a blanket?
Right in front of Hancock after the fire's been started.

Now that I've scared out the nation leaders, what do I do?
Go down into the main hall and take the Gold Quill Pen.

Where do I get vinegar?
You need to make it. This requires time lapse.
Have you found anything that may contain or become vinegar?
Perhaps the Wine Bottle?
Put it into the Time Capsule in the main hall. 400 years later, have Laverne retrieve it for you. It will have turned into vinegar.

Laverne is trapped in a tree in the future! How do I get her out of there?
The tree is too big to deal with in the future, but may be smaller to deal with in the past.
Bernard has no access to the tree...
Only Hoagie has access to it. You'll have to figure out how do get rid of it.
Chop down the tree.

How do I chop down the tree?
Hoagie with a sharp object. That's a scary thought.
Leave tree-cutting to the professionals.
George Washington, perhaps? He's cut down many a cherry tree in his day.
If you can convince him, he'll chop down the tree for you and free Laverne in the future.

How do I get George Washington to chop down the tree?
First, you need to be introduced.
Second, you need to get talking about him and cherry trees.
Lastly, dare him to cut it down. Not ask, dare.
If everythingis right, he'll go and take your bet.

George Washington won't chop down the tree because it's a kumquat tree! Not a cherry tree!
Appearances can be deceiving if you make them.
All that matters is the color. Yellow to red.
Make the kumquats red.
Paint them red.

Where do I find the Red Paint?
In the attic bedroom by the window.

What do I do when I have the Oil, Vinegar, and Gold?
Give it to Dr. Red, so he can make the battery.

Uh-oh. The super battery has no power flowing to it. How do I charge it?
It has to be enough to send a machine through time.
How much did it take in 'Back to the Future?' A few gigawatts?
Only lightning can supply that much power.
Get it involved with Ben Franklin's kite experiment and have lightning strike it.

There is no storm brewing. How is this kite experiment going to work without lightning?
You need to start a storm.
Ever notice that it rains when you wash your car?
Anything around here need cleaning?
Wash the carriage. It will start raining and Ben will go in to redesign his Frank-O-Copter.

How do I wash the carriage?
You need a brush.
You need a bucket of water.
You need soap.
Put the soap in the water and use the brush to clean the carriage with.

Where do get the brush?
The cleaning room; the cabinet.

Where do I get the bucket?
The cleaning supplies room; the floor

Where do I get the water for the bucket?
In the kitchen; the water pump.

Where do I get the soap?
On the maid's cart, in the upstairs hallways.

I can't find the Maid's Cart!
You need to find the Maid first.
Try calling her first.
Use the Cord to summon the maid.
After the maid has arrived, the cart will appear outside in the hall.

The maid won't let me have the soap! How do I get it?
She finished her work too fast.
You have to keep her busy even longer.
Just mess up the room a little more.
Use the bed. That will mess it up long enough to keep her busy.

I've started up the rain, but all it did was drive Ben inside. How is he supposed to get his kite experiment going?
He needs to build a new kite.
He requires a light water-proof material.
Rubber, perhaps?
Give him the Rubber Lab Coat.

Where do I get the Lab Coat?
Red Edison's Lab; on the rack.

How do I get the Lab Coat from Dr. Red?
It's for employees only.
You need to be an employee.
Just apply for the job.
Give Red the Help-Wanted Sign. He'll hire you and you can have the Lab Coat.

I can't figure out how to work this kite experiment!
When Ben says NOW, you PUSH the kite.
What part of PUSH don't you understand?
Just PUSH the kite when Ben says NOW.
Doing just about anything else will fail the experiment.

Ben keeps getting fried each time lightning strikes the kite! What do I do to prevent this?
Normally, Ben Franklin put a key on his string to make the experiment work.
The metal absorbs the the electricity.
You need to put something metal in the kite pocket before pushing it off.
Load the Super-Battery into the pocket, so that it will both make the experiment work, and get itself charged in the process.

Where do I get the Super-Battery?
Have Dr. Red make it.
It will be found on his shelf afterwards. Just take it.

How do I change the statue's appearance?
In the future, the statue holds the sword in its left hand because the model was left-handed.
Had the model been right-handed, the statue would appear different.
Both Ned and Jed Edison are different-handed. You need to make them switch places.
You need to ruin Ned's (or is that Jed's?) statue.
Ned's (or Jed's) hammer is made for their needs.
Switch the artist's current hammer with an opposing-handed hammer to make them ruin their work.

Where do I get another hammer?
Dr. Red's lab. On the workbench.

How do I make a Tentacle Costume for Laverne?
Hoagie has no experience in sewing.
Someone else does.
Search for Betsy Ross in the upstairs rooms.
Place the Tentacle Anatomy Chart on the plans for the American Flag so that in the future, you have a nice tentacle windsock handy for a disguise.

Where do I get Spaghetti?
Kitchen; shelf

How do I get the Horse's Teeth?
They're false. They have to come out sometime.
When do people take out their false teeth normally.
How about when going to sleep?
Put the horse to sleep by reading Bernard's Textbook to it. Then take the teeth in the glass.

Where do I get a Toy Mouse?
Upstairs, with the Evil Cat.

How do I get the Toy Mouse away from the Evil Cat?
First use the bed on the left.
After you discover the squeaky mattress, switch it with the bed on the right.
Now use the squeeaky mattress to distract the cat away from the mouse.
While the cat is busy, take the Toy.

How do I get a vaccuum cleaner for Laverne?
Read the flyer: "George says: Every American should have a Vaccuum Cleaner in their basement."
How can you put a hardware flyer to good use?
Key words: 'George says:', and it's in a suggestive format.
Place the flyer in the suggestion box so that George Washington can add it to the constitution. In the future, we'll find a vaccuum cleaner in the basement.

Where do I get the Flyer?
Refer to Bernard

Where do I get a letter?
The mailbox outside.

Presenting Bernard

What do I do?
GET A NEW DIAMOND FOR THE TIME MACHINE.

Where do I get a diamond?
You need to phone-order a new REAL one from the shopping channel.

How do I phone-order a new diamond?
Three things to do.
You need to get a phone number first.
Next, you need to get two-million dollars.
Finally, you need get a phone and call 'em.

Where's a phone number for the shopping channel?
It's displayed right there on the channel.
On the TV.
There are two TVs in the house.
You can either turn on the one in the Honeymoon suite, or the one in Room 101.

Where do I find two-million dollars?
Ask Dr. Fred.
You'll find there's some in the safe.
He has an expired two-million dollar contract in there which needs to be signed.
Get the contract and make him sign it.

Where is the safe?
Up in Dr. Fred's office.
Behind the painting.

How do I open the safe? What's the combination for it?
Bernard doesn't know!
Only person knows, but not when they're awake.
Only Dr. Fred does, but only when he's sleepwalking.
You need to learn the combination from Dr. Fred while he's sleepwalking.

How do I put Dr. Fred to sleep?
It will be hard when all he drinks is coffee.
Regular coffee anyways.
This guy hasn't sleep in two years; he's in a highly unstable state.
Pour Decaf into his mug. He'll fall asleep immediately and sleepwalk upstairs to open the safe.

Where do I get Decaf?
The kitchen on the coffee maker.

Dr. Fred is opening and closing the safe too fast for me to grab the contract!
You can't take the contract NOW.
Learn the combination and open the safe later when Dr. Fred isn't around.

How am I supposed to learn the combination when Dr. Fred works it too fast?
He's still too caffeine-jacked. You need to slow him down.
This will require technology.
Tape him opening the safe using the surveillance system in the upstairs rooms.
After taping it, set the VCR setting to EP, REWIND, and PLAY it again, in slow motion.

How do I use the VCR when Edna won't let me near it?
Get rid of Edna.
She's not too hard to get out of the way.
Notice that the chair has wheels?
Push Edna out of the door.

When I push Edna, she saves herself by swinging back into the room by grabbing onto the statue. What do I do?
You'll have to change the statue so it doesn't act as a grabbing spot.
Vandalism won't work with Edna watching it like that.
You'll have to go back to before the statue was made.
Have Hoagie take care of the statue in the past.

Where do I get the tape?
Green Tentacle's Room, on the stereo.

I've taped Dr. Fred but now two IRS agents have taken him upstairs! How do I get to him?
They've locked him up in the upstairs room.
They won't let you into that door.
There's an alternate route.
Go up the chimney and through the window.

How do I get Dr. Fred out of this room when he's all tied up in red tape?
Take a deep breath...and here we go.
Take the rope and throw it over the pulley. Go down to the yard and tie the rope to Dead Cousin Ted (the mummy). Head back up to the roof and pull Ted up into the room, resulting in you falling off the roof yourself. Go back upstairs, into the room, and switch Dr. Fred with Ted. Tie Dr. Fred to the rop,e go outside, and pull on the rope to get him and you out of there and down to the ground.
Happy now?

No. Where do I get the rope?
Pick up the rope that Dr. Fred is tied up in.

I try to switch Fred with Ted, but the IRS agent see the difference. What's wrong?
Look at the picture. Fred and Ted almost look alike, covered in bandages and everything.
But Dr. Fred is tied up in RED tape. Ted is tied up in WHITE bandanges.
Ted has to go under color changes.
Paint Ted Red. See Red Ted.

Where do I get the Paint?
Refer to the Hoagie Section.

I have Dr. Fred in the lab, but he's out cold!
He hasn't slept in two years, he needs this.
You need to jumpstart him somehow.
What else can do this for you?
Pour Regular Coffee into his mouth!

The coffee would pour all over his face. How do I get him to drink it?
He can't drink it. You have to divert the fluid into his mouth.
Quite easy actually. How else do you pour large amounts into small places?
What kitchen utensil fulfills this?
Put the funnel into his mouth and pour in the coffee.

Where's the Regular Coffee?
Same place as the Decaf.

Where's the Funnel?
Laundry room; in the cabinet.

How do I get Dr. Fred to sign the contract?
He's too pig-headed to oblige, isn't he?
Play on his curiosity.
Tell him that you'll just take care of Purple Tentacle yourself.
Afterwards, just fool him with a plan and Bernard will get him to sign the contract.

I can't mail in the contract. It's overdue.
YOU can't.
Hoagie can.
Send it back to Hoagie and have him mail it.

How do I get Hoagie to mail it?
Refer to the Hoagie Section.

The contract requires a stamp. Where do I get one?
Check Weird Ed's room.

How do I get Weird Ed's stamp collection?
You may have to play mean here.

You need to pour disappearing ink all over it.
Afterwards, Weird Ed will get so mad that he'll kick you out of his room and throw his collection at you. Congrats! You have it!

Where do I find Disappearing Ink?

How do I move the big fat guy out from on top of the sweater?
We'll be needing some good vibrations for this.
You need to get the bed to shake him off.
Use the coin slot next to the bed.
Insert two dimes and the bed will shake him off for you.

Where do I get two dimes?
One is in the coin return in the pay phone in the lobby.
The other is stuck to the lobby floor in some gum.

How do I get the gum with a dime stuck in it off the floor?
It's stuck tight.
We need leverage to pry it off.
Something strong and sturdy.
Use the Crowbar to pry it off.

Where do I get a Crowbar?

Hook up the extension cord to the machine.
Put the extension cord out the window.
Go outside and connect it to the Chron-O-John.
Should the generator be running, this will restore complete power to the Chron-O-John.

Where do I find Vinegar?
Upstairs in the time capsule after Hoagie has put in the wine.

How do I open the Time capsule?
Use Hoagie's can opener to open it.

After both Chron-O-Johns are plugged in, and the diamond has been purchased, Dr.Fred sets about returning Laverne and Hoagie to the present. Now the plan is set and everything is in order to return to yesterday to shut off the Sludge-O-Matic and prevent Purple Tentacle from becoming an evil mutant. The problem: Shortly after the arrival, Purple Tentacle steals a Chron-O-John with the plan to go back and stop Bernard and his friends from interfering in his plans. Green Tentacle comes right after him, taking the other Chron-O-John to try and stop him. Having no other choice, Bernard, Hoagie, and Laverne load themselves into the remainging Chron-O-John and time travel back to yesterday to save the world.

They crash land down in the front yard to find that Green Tentacle's been tied up and that the journey through time in one Chron-O-John has combined DNA within the three anti-heroes to make them into some kind of three-headed human-type creature. To make matters worse, Purple arrives with an army of future versions of himself to fight the trio. As Purple sends out ten tentacles to guard the Sludge-O-Matic, his future self chases after the trio with a Diminuator ray to squish them for good. Fortunately, the batteries are limited so Bernar dand his friends successfully make it to an upstairs bedroom where they can hide...for now.

The Three-Headed Monkey!

All right, I have a crazy guy hunting around for me, and ten tentacles are downstairs...what am I supposed to do?
Shut off the Sludge-O-Matic at all costs!

How do I get past the 10 Tentacles?
They're not moving anywhere, not without force.
Notice how they're standing?
What does it remind you of?
Throw the Bowling Ball at the group to clear the path to the Sludge-O-Matic.

Where do I find the Bowling Ball?
Upstairs, in Green Tentacle's room.

How do I get to Green Tentacle's room with Old Man Tentacle watching the halls?
Listen and listen carefully.
First open the door to Room 101.
When Purple zaps you down to miniature size, run into the room.
Run into the mousehole and enter Green Tentacle's room.

I tried to shut off the machine, but Purple keeps zapping me and turning it back on! How do I get rid of this pest?
You have to outsmart Purple at his own game of shrinking things.
You need to make him shrink himself.
Talk to him.
First, ask him why he hates humans, then blame it on Dr. Fred. Next, compliment him on his aim with the ray gun, and ask him to try it out on Dr. Fred. Purple will oblige, and hit Dr. Fred's forehead mirror, zapping himself instead!

And then it all ends!
